East West Eye Observes How Nutrition Can Help Your Eyes

Certain foods you can eat to help you prevent eye disease

Our diets play an important role in our bodies health and eye care. When our bodies have the proper nutrition, we function better, and our senses run on all cylinders. Not only does eating right make us feel better, it prevents disease by keeping our immune systems at full strength. With that said, it is important to eat healthy so that our eyes receive the benefits and preventative measures that eating healthy provides.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been said to help our eyes fight against cataracts, macular degeneration, and dry eyes. They can be found in seafood. But if you're a vegetarian, they are also found in nuts and Flaxseed oil.

Fruits and Veggies are also great for continual eye care and may prevent future eye care procedures. The more colorful and rich, the better. Many fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids. These are compounds that give fruits and veggies their pigments, and are said to decrease the risk of many eye diseases. Darker, leafy greens like Kale, Spinach, Collard greens, and others are high in vitamins essential to your eye health. Carrots, bell peppers, kiwi, guava, papaya, strawberries, tomatoes, pumpkin, corn and cantaloupe are all excellent sources of vitamins A and C. Unfortunately for you, if you're not a fan of spicy foods, red and green hot chili peppers have the highest source of vitamin C than any other food. But if you can stand a little heat, then add some spice.

As always, East West Eye encourages you to check in with your doctors when changing your diet. Certain foods can counteract with your prescriptions, so it's always best to ask what is best for your eye care needs.
