Easy Steps To Build A Career In VLSI

Career in VLSI field has met a tremendous growth nowadays. Students can also get good job career in this field.

There are many candidates who are interested to know more about VLSI projects and how to undergo it for developing a wonderful career.

With some of the following steps, it is possible to have a great career in this particular domain.

Step 1 – Basic knowledge and concept building

Basics/concepts are vital for this domain. If the individual comes from an Electronics background or computer background, then it is necessary to have an in-depth understanding with respect to the topics.

Step 2 – Short term Certification courses after or during the Engineering degree

VLSI projects are immensely popular among the candidates, who are aspiring to make it big in their career. The candidates learn various programming languages and several short term courses to increase knowledge.

Similar pattern can be applied for semiconductor field. Several institutes are present in the market that offer such courses and is worth to try. Along with the certificate obtained, the knowledge gathered is likely to play an important role in an individual’s career.

Joining a good institute after a thorough research and careful decision would help the person to save both money and time.

Full time certificate courses are offered by most of the institutes and candidates can get trained on it. However, the candidates need to apply through entrance exams and qualify.

Step 3 – Master degree course from well-known universities/colleges

Candidates need to go for the engineering degree and should undertake VLSI projects and they must be specialized in MTech/MS program. Different universities offer such courses.

While undergoing the master degree, the candidates should be able to build the concepts and learn the VLSI Design flow. Students need to work on various VLSI concepts and EDA tools. Some of them are as follows:

VLSI  Concepts

  •           Routing, Layout, CTS, Timing, Placement
  •           RTL Synthesis.
  •           EDA Tools
  •           Backend tools: Mentor (Caliber), Cadence (QRC, Encounter),    Synopsys (Starrcxt, Primetime, ICC).
  •           Language and Frontend tools: VHDL/Verilog, Netli st Simulator, HSPICE and design compiler.

In case, the individual is undergoing any kind of special master program then the selected final semester project or internship needs to be related to the VLSI design, where a specific circuit is designed right from the scratch.

Step 4 – Project trainee / Internship

The candidates are not required to search for full-time jobs in this domain. Several organizations do hire candidates as project trainee or interns for a period of 6 months to 1 year for evaluating the skills and problem solving techniques.

The experience gained from the live project would help the candidates immensely. At times, there are chances that even after going through all the above steps, the candidates are not able to get an entry into VLSI field.

With proper self evaluation, it is possible to understand the cause of failure and try to do much better in the next attempt.

Reasons for failure

•           Lack in understanding the basics clearly

•           Not having favorable attitude

•           Not joining a good institution

•           Not giving the best efforts required

•           Either being overconfident or facing lack of confidence
