Online, March 1, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Getting an internship in a well known organization is probably as difficult as landing a dream job. Divya of Era Business School Dwarka, had lady luck smiling down at her when she aced the interview and got offered an internship at the Intercontinental Hotels Group. "In fact, my college,EBS Dwarka, suggested my name to IHG and I went for the interview," she recalls.
At IHG, Divya found "The support services and all reservations are done from the office I interned at. It supports seven brands of hotels in India. They include popular brands like the Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites."
Hotels are a very people oriented business, and HR plays a key role in getting the right people to match the right job requirement.
"During my internship there, I had to analyze the details of an ongoing HR project. As the project was already on, they made me a part of it," Divya says, happy to be included in a real life project that contributed to running a multinational company.
Quite unlike the stiff upper lip and mechanical multinational setup, IHG made Divya quite comfortable. Being as ease was itself a learning experience for her. She learnt a lot in other areas too. "I learnt how a corporate office works. It was a great experience because I got a chance to work in a multinational company. The atmosphere there was very different from what I imagined it would be. Everybody was so friendly," she recalls.
At IHG, punctuality is paramount and Divya made sure she was never late for anything. She also got to learn how the system works, and how she could contribute towards making it run smoothly. "Earlier, I thought that HR is only about understanding people, and recruiting. But there is so much more. There is a lot beyond what I thought and imagined," she confesses. This internship has opened her eyes to the depth and scope of HR.
Her internship at IHG was a first experience, and it contributed immensely to her understanding the corporate world. "That is true in any organization," she says, "But I got to learn many things from IHG."
Normally interns are given the less important jobs. Some get to do very little for fear of inexperience. Divya's contributions, however, were taken seriously. "My project was on an analysis basis. My suggestions were taken seriously and some were implemented also," she smiles.
Era Business School Dwarka, is proud of her.
