Economists Share 2016 Home Selling Tips; Door Store America Weighs In

Door Store America shares some tips and trends for selling a home in 2016.

Though real estate trends are not always easy to predict, and do not always pan out as the experts say they will, all signs point to 2016 as an ideal time to put a home on the market. According to leading economists, 2016 is shaping up to be a robust year for real estate sales—a true seller’s market. Realtor.com shares some tips for capitalizing on these positive market conditions; meanwhile, in a new press statement, Door Store America offers further insights.

“The 2016 housing market is forecasted to be mainly a seller’s market, filled with increasing home prices, relatively low inventory, and fierce competition between buyers,” comments Jonathan Smoke, Realtor.com’s chief economist. “For sellers, it’s about understanding the ins and outs of their local market so they can optimize the price of their home and close quickly.”

According to Albert Bem, owner of Door Store America, it’s also about making sure a home is in tip-top, move-in-ready condition. “Even with low inventory, you’re going to have competition, and you’re going to want to ensure that your home stands out from the competition,” Bem affirms. “That means making an investment in your home maintenance and décor.”

Bem shares a number of secrets to maximizing a home’s appeal—starting with new exterior and interior doors, like the ones he sells at Door Store America. “New doors can change the entire visual feel of your home, and cast it in a whole new aesthetic light,” Bem says. “What new doors indicate to buyers is that the home has been taken care of and really loved.”

A fresh coat of paint can also go a long way, Bem says. “Again, anything you can do to show that you’re invested in home upkeep will go over well with buyers,” he remarks. When painting a home, warm and neutral colors are always preferable.

Curb appeal is also important, even behind external doors. As the spring season draws closer, Bem recommends that homeowners invest some time and effort into their lawn care. “Make sure nothing looks cluttered or unkempt,” he suggests.

Appliance upgrades go a long way, too. “Any appliances that are very clearly dated should be exchanged for some newer models—preferably sleek stainless steel,” Bem says.

But it’s not just aesthetics that sell a home. In the Realtor.com article, Smoke points to the importance of proper pricing.

“Making the error of going for a price that’s well above the market price is a recipe for being let down and potentially not selling the home at all,” he offers.

Bem agrees. “The point is to provide a really enticing value—which means a good-looking, well-cared-for home at a price that is fair,” he concludes.
