EFinancialCareers Quarterly UK Barometer: City Recruitment Makes Strong Start To Year

Job opportunities for those working in equities have surged by 41% over the last quarter according to the latest eFinancialCareers UK Quarterly Barometer, with strong demand also experienced for private equity/venture capital professionals.

Job opportunities for those working in equities have surged by 41% over the last quarter according to the latest eFinancialCareers UK Quarterly Barometer, with strong demand also experienced for private equity/venture capital professionals - up nearly 40% over the previous quarter.

Front riders in the chasing pack - in terms of increased numbers of jobs advertised in the quarter when compared to the previous quarter - were positions in debt/fixed income (up 30%), consultancy (up 29%) and compliance (up 26%).

However, the rapid growth in demand experienced in the previous quarter for traders and quantitative analysts softened in the three months ended 31 January with numbers increasing 15% and 9% respectively. Year-on-year, though, job postings for both have more than doubled.

The eFinancialCareers Quarterly Barometer tracks UK positions advertised on eFinancialCareers in sectors where there is a minimum level of 300 advertised posts each month in the quarter.

James Bennett, Managing Director EMEA and APAC at eFinancialCareers.com, commented:
"The November-December signals were already looking positive as the seasonal slowdown normally experienced in the sector was significantly less pronounced this year; and then in January we saw a strong rise. This has been driven by a combination of those firms that are rapidly re-building teams as revenue levels grow, and those that are still re-structuring. The pressure of greater regulatory requirements is additionally leading to the expansion of back office positions. It is good to see that professional services firms are also now stepping up their hiring activity suggesting that the City's recovery is touching the wider professional community."

Of the 23 UK financial market sectors tracked by the eFinancialCareers Quarterly Barometer, only one - commodities - has experienced a decline in the quarter, down 18%. Year on year, though, commodities positions advertised have increased by a third.

Sectors qualifying for the UK Barometer for the three months ended 31 January 2011 were Capital Markets, Asset Management, Consultancy, FX & Money Markets, Investment Banking / M&A, Trading, Research, Compliance/Legal, Quantitative Analytics, Derivatives, Debt / Fixed Income, Accounting & Finance, Sales & Marketing, Operations, Information Technology, Private Banking / Wealth Management, Risk Management, Equities, Commodities, Hedge Funds, Credit, Corporate Banking, Private Equity / Venture Capital.
