Elberta Restaurant & Bar Offering NEW Program That Promotes Healthy Eating And Dining Experience

NEW Meal On Me (M.O.M) Program Advocates for Healthy Dining, Cooking, and Eating by Gifting Meals to Families Active in Their Church, School or Work Community

A 2015 Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand selection, Elberta Restaurant & Bar announces its new healthy eating initiative meant to strengthen families: the Meal On Me (M.O.M) program. M.O.M is a mixture of dining and hands-on educational cooking experiences with tips for smart food shopping that promote nutritionally-balanced meals when preparing similar options at home. Conceived by Elberta owner Erwin Caesar, M.O.M builds up families which in turn builds community. On Wednesday evening, October 29, 2014 at Elberta, located at 335 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, M.O.M will hold its second dining experience.

“You know, I’m excited to gift dining experiences to Brooklyn families who, like me, are focused on better living and a strong sense of community,” said Mr. Caesar. “Initially this program was just about selecting healthy dishes from Elberta’s menu and then showing families how to prepare a course while in our kitchen. I realized after our September 2014 kickoff with Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, we had to grow this program. So now after the family dines at Elberta, they’re given a free tour of a farmers market and a cooking lesson by a trained chef. The circle is complete. We love it!”

Elberta’s M.O.M October family is headed by Lakisha Adams, who along with her children Shameek, 17, Shavonnie, 12, and Christopher, 9, are active members of Emmanuel Baptist Church [http://www.ebcconnects.com], which is located in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill section. “I’m thankful that Elberta offers this program because it gives us a chance to learn new and creative ways for eating healthy – both out and at home. My youngest suffers from severe food allergies, so we have to be super careful about what we eat and cook. This program is tailor-made for us,” said Ms. Adams. Emmanuel’s Senior Pastor, the Reverend Anthony Trufant, agrees, “We are proud to be a part of Meal On Me and delighted that our church members will receive this blessing. This program is aligned with our mission to minister to the needs of people. We look forward to M.O.M continuing to serve the community.” Fundamental to program success and continued positive impact is the educational component, which Janelle “Chef Jin” Nicol-Galvez of Jin’s Journey [http://www.jinsjourney.com] will lead.

Chef Jin will take the M.O.M families on a farmers market tour and teach them how to select fresh foods before heading home to their own kitchens. Following the tour, families will receive a cooking lesson from Chef Jin. “It’s an awesome opportunity to play a vital role in the M.O.M program. When Erwin and I met to discuss the program, we immediately saw a tremendous amount of overlap between our respective passions for healthy living. It’s a win all around.”

As of November 1st the M.O.M table at Elberta will be available for reservations only. A portion of the proceeds from M.O.M table reservations will be used to gift future dining and educational experiences. M.O.M has received support from Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, Interfaith Hospital, Emmanuel Baptist Church, and other community based organizations with an eye on Brooklyn’s health and welfare.
