Eleanor Wint Receives UNIA 2013 Award for Education

Online, August 25, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Well-known Professor/Activist Eleanor Wint whose career started in the mid-1960s in the Caribbean, is this year's recipient of the Marcus Garvey Award in the field of Education. Her original illustrator, conceptualizer and long-time associate Ireko Baker, accepted the award on her behalf after listening to her video acceptance speech. In accepting the award, Dr Wint pointed out that over the years, working with and writing for children, she has realised that simplicity is the key. Dr Wint is presently in Ghana working with a rural community developing facilites and projects for children with the Rita Marley Foundation.

Jamaica's UNIA president Steven Golding, who presented the award, spoke of Garvey's relevance, 73 years after his death. "Long before Vybz Kartel and Jah Cure, Marcus Garvey was writing music from behind prison bars," said Golding.

Dr Wint recently published "Marcus Teaches Us"Marcus Teaches Us a delightful, colorfully illustrated educational/activity book for preschool children. The book teaches the philosophy of Marcus Garvey using coloring, writing and pictures as activites to bring across the message. Marcus Garvey, Jamaica's first National Hero, was born in St Ann. Considered father of the Pan African Movement, he has inspired Black Leaders over the world, particularly in Africa. Today many reggae artistes sing of his inspiration including Burning Spear, Culture and Bob Marley.
