Electronic Cigarettes Are Becoming Popular Among Teens

One of the biggest controversies about electronic cigarettes is the fact that there is not regulation in every state to prevent them from buying the product. It is now more evident that this regulation needs to be placed in every state since the use of the electronic cigarettes is on the rise in teenagers.

Data from the National Youth Tobacco Survey showed that 1.1% of students in middle school use an electronic cigarette once a month and about 2.8% of high school students. This has doubled from the data in 2011 and translates to about 1.78 million children and teens who have tried the device in the US. This data was published in the Center for Disease Controls Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a statement, "The increased use of e-cigarettes by teens is deeply troubling. Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes."

The FDA is projected to present regulations for electronic cigarettes this October. Clearette Electronic Cigarettes has come forward to show support that they fully support regulations on the devices to prohibit minors from buying them. Clearette has precautions on their website to not sell to minors.

As reported by the LA Times, Tom Kiklas, the chief financial officer of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Assn., said a federal appeals court ruled in 2010 that e-cigarettes were not medical devices and should instead be considered tobacco products. As such, their sale to minors is prohibited by law, and it's the responsibility of retailers to ensure that buyers are of legal age, he said.

Many retailers in states where it is not prohibited have commented that they will still not sell the product to minors and follow the tobacco age guideline. With no enforcement in place some retailers are still allowing them to be sold to minors.

Many have voiced their opinion that electronic cigarette companies are marketing to the youth of America because of the flavors they offer. The fact is that a majority of adults like the flavors offered and electronic cigarette companies should not be held responsible for the retailers allowing teenagers to buy the product and we at Clearette agree with Tom Kiklas.
