Healthcare futurist and best-selling author Jack Uldrich shared his insights on the future of healthcare at the New York Healthcare Trustees' 38th Annual Trustee Conference in Saratoga Springs, NY on Saturday.

Uldrich began his presentation by identifying key trends and technologies that healthcare leaders must be aware of, and used industry examples to illustrate possible ways that each could transform healthcare in the future. These trends include rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, wearable computing, telemedicine, data analytics, the growing importance of the internet of things to improve efficiency, and new opportunities created by blockchain technology. He also discussed how corporate partnerships and recent acquisitions are reshaping the industry.

If you broaden your awareness of the periphery, stay humble about the need to unlearn and become an active thinker, you will come to your 'A-HA' moments and better position yourself and your organization for the future.

Uldrich's presentation, Tomorrow Will Change Even Faster Than Today, was based on his "Big AHA" approach to helping leaders future-proof their organizations. "AHA" is Uldrich's acronym for Awareness, Humility and Action which he says, "are the cornerstone of great leadership."

Uldrich used his AHA framework to help attendees see the future from a different perspective and identify opportunities created by change. He believes these core concepts will empower leaders regardless of what type of technological changes occur over the next few decades in the industry.

He also says the Big AHA is a "sure-fire way to brace your organization against the transformational trends of tomorrow, today." Uldrich's insights and frameworks for thinking about the future differently, like "The Big AHA," have given him international recognition as an expert on emerging technological trends and their effect on society and business.

Uldrich said, "Organizations must strive to enhance their awareness of changes on the horizon; have enough humility to acknowledge that what served the business well in the past might not be sufficient tomorrow, and they need to be willing to take action in the face of less-than-perfect information. If you broaden your awareness of the periphery, stay humble about the need to unlearn and become an active thinker, you will come to your 'A-HA' moments and better position yourself and your organization for the future."

Regarding his work, Uldrich says: "It is not enough to deeply understand how one technology works. You have to understand how multiple technologies will converge to spin off to create new opportunities. The work I do is all about helping organizations prepare for the coming technological changes so that they can efficiently navigate and determine the course of their future."

As a specialist in healthcare trends, Uldrich has addressed dozens of healthcare associations and hospitals, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Audiology, American Nurses Association, California Nurse Leaders Association, the American Academy of Neurologists, Bausch and Lomb, Boston Scientific, Alcetel-Lucent/Verizon Forum on Wireless Healthcare, United Healthcare, IASIS Healthcare, Allina Hospitals, Michigan Health, and St. Jude Medical.
