Emerald Introduces Augmented Reality Technology to Its Book Portfolio
Digital Humanities is the first Emerald book to include innovative AR enhancements
Online, January 20, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Emerald Group Publishing, a global publisher linking research and practice to the benefit of society, has announced the publication of Digital Humanities - the first of its titles to be published with Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The new book, published as Volume 7 of the well-respected book series Cutting-edge Technologies in Higher Education, includes AR enhancements, such as expert interviews, embedded throughout the book providing readers with a more engaging experience.
As one of the first education text books to use AR technology in this way, it allows readers to view, as they read, video commentary by experts in the field. By using the Layar app, a free AR app that is available for download from the Apple® or Android™ app stores, each image digitally 'comes to life' and a video narration about the topic is played.
Bryan W. Carter, author of Digital Humanities, comments, "AR has the ability to change the way people discover and interact with useful and educational information. By including videos of experts for example, who describe their theoretical framework and reasons for using said applications, this unique aspect differentiates this book from similar works".
Sharon Parkinson, Publisher at Emerald, adds, "As one of the fastest growing tools in education, AR technology is quickly establishing itself in the publishing industry. Emerald is keen to leverage the power of AR technology to release products that are more engaging for an audience that has become strongly connected to all forms of technology".
As one of the first academic publishers to bridge the gap between the scholarly and practitioner world, the Emerald Books portfolio explores topical issues in a wide range of subject areas, including business and management, education, sociology and public policy, and transport.
