Emiratization Of Emergency Medicine Services In United Arab Emirates A Key Focus

Under the leadership of HAAD and MOH there is increasing recognition of the role and importance of pre-hospital care in the total patient care cycle

There is increasing recognition of the role and importance of emergency medicine (EM) in the total patient care cycle in the United Arab Emirates. The Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and the UAE Ministry of Health have exerted immense efforts in ensuring that there is continuous improvement in primary healthcare services through continuing medical education and leveraging technology.

Mr. Robert Ball, Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Company, Abu Dhabi will be speaking about Emergency Medicine services in the region at the 10th Middle East Emergency Medicine Conference taking place from 14-16 October at the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress (ADMC) held at ADNEC, UAE. Mr. Ball believes that Dubai and Abu Dhabi have excellent emergency medicine systems and are providing good patient outcomes.

"It is crucial to train and accredit emergency staff on a national level. One of the most important issues for any organisation is to know that the staff they employ have the right credentials and to ensure they are continually supported by regular CME training," says Mr. Ball.

The National Ambulance Company, in line with HAAD, is a recognized provider and an Authorized Training Centre with the American Heart Association, Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI) as well as the American College of Pediatrics (ACP). Both the National Ambulance Company, and the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress, offers continuing medical education (CME) programmes for health professionals in the region.

According to Mr. Ball, "Growth in the region is a sign of the strong economic base the region has which is even more pronounced in the UAE. The strategic vision of the UAE requires all agencies to support this plan. Emiratization is a key focus for all EM providers. With so many career opportunities for Emiratis, attracting candidates to a career as a paramedic is a challenge but one we working on. Balancing workforce needs and ensuring the quality of care delivered is consistent can only come through investment in people and having good clinical governance all of which is being done."

This year, UAE-based Leader Healthcare will be amongst the exhibitors at ADMC 2012 and they will showcase Zoll X Series Monitor Defibrillator - a portable monitor defibrillator for the military and air medical operations. It makes life easy for soldiers and rescuers, who currently cope with heavier devices during emergency.

"We believe that the Middle East is a major market for Leader Healthcare due to its sound and progressive healthcare planning and infrastructure. We have always associated ADMC with unparalleled exposure and visibility of healthcare technologies. This year, once again, we will be utilizing the ADMC platform to unveil new technologies," says Ansari Ateeq, head of marketing and clinical training at Leader Healthcare.

Organised by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, the Abu Dhabi Medical Congress is one of the region's key healthcare events. As a result of an increase on the demand for emergency services in the GCC and Middle East region, the event brings together regional and international emergency service professionals and industry leaders along with product manufacturers and distributors under one roof. Running alongside the Emergency Medicine Congress are five separate verticals which include the Primary Healthcare Congress, Patient Safety Congress, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Congress, Dentistry Congress as well as the Nursing Congress.
