This year the Summit of the Southeast’s audience had the pleasure to listen to and be part of Bioscape Digital’s approach to engaging patients and solving the most critical patient-provider problems. On Friday October 30th, Stuart Bracken, Co-Founder and CEO of Bioscape, delivered a presentation titled “Health IT Enabling Patient Engagement”.

The core premise of Stuart’s presentation revolved around one sentence: “Engagement is not showing, Engagement is Empowering… How the Hospital can Utilize the Patient.”

Breaking all paradigms and disrupting the common way in which hospitals see the patient, Stuart stated that most hospitals “engage” patients, though not the right way. To get on the right path, the hospital must transcend the way in which it sees the patient. Hospitals must see them as a valuable resource that can help them do a better and more effective job. Additionally, “different resources that the usual health system has in place focus on providing the Patient with Content, and fail to understand that the most critical aspect for the Patient is the Transaction,” Bracken expressed.

The Bioscape approach to engaging patients helps overcome today’s critical barriers: in the new economic reality of the health care industry, where costs are continuously being trimmed, regulation continues to grow, and competition keeps accelerating, the medical team must Utilize the Patient as a resource. As a result patients will become engaged, the health system will save resources, and more valuable information will be gathered.

Furthermore, Bracken made it clear that patients must be thought of as “consumers that are looking to complete a Transaction: they want to recover and be healthy over anything else, and since they have enormous interest in the Transaction being successful, they are willing to be invested in their care. Hence, there is an opportunity to Utilize them as a resource in order for the hospital to provide them with a fruitful experience and deliver excellent medical care.”

Bioscape’s platform engages Patients in their care in a way that is timely, relevant, easy-to-use (low-friction), effective, and customizable for the health system. These five components are the key to make available to the Patient a successful Transaction. Finally, tablets and apps are a two-way interaction. In the Bioscape platform’s arena, information passes both ways, to the Patient in form of education that is interesting and useful, and back to the provider in the form of interest (signups), personal health information, feedback, statistics, participation, and more.

Bioscape is at the center of Utilizing the Patient as a resource. With an interactive, customizable, and engaging tablet-based platform, Bioscape helps improve the Patient experience as well as Patient outcomes, while simultaneously both helping increase revenue and saving the healthcare system money.

In its 7th year, the Summit of the Southeast 2015 convened top industry leaders to share case studies, best practices and actionable next steps to help face daily challenges and manage emerging technology solutions. The Summit gave access to the industry’s leading minds and most innovative health IT professionals, clinicians, and entrepreneurs with three days of education and professional networking.

The Summit took place on October 28, 29 and 30 in Nashville, Tennessee, a city known as the nation’s health care hub, housing a swarm of large health care employers, making it the perfect setting to host the conference which has captivated the attention of nearly a thousand attendees each year.
