Long a staple of jewelry sales in the spring and early summer, engagement rings have been showing tremendous growth in the third quarter of the year as well. Now, thanks to interviews with wedding coordinators, party planners and jewelry experts, a pattern is starting to emerge as to why this is happening.

"Wedding planning has become such an extravagant affair for most people they are requiring more time to prepare for the big day." Said a leading wedding planner from Atlanta who was recently interviewed about upcoming trends in the business. "This creates a bit of a domino effect. People are planning further and further ahead, so couples that come behind them already have their options limited. This forces couples to plan even further out."

Typically an engagement period lasted eight to twelve months. This usually results in the purchase of engagement rings about a year before the wedding. Now, with the new time constraints young couples are facing today, an engagement can be up to eighteen months. Wanting a late spring or early summer wedding, the result is often a surge of rings being bought in the late summer and early autumn months.

Exit interviews conducted with several men who had just bought engagement rings showed that at least half of them were moving in the other direction. Fed up with all of the headaches that come with planning such a big event and trying to make it work at the same time that hundreds of other weddings are held, they and their soon to be fiances are instead doing shorter engagements with lower key weddings. Of the twelve men interviewed, only three said they were having a June wedding and only five said it would be at least a year. Meanwhile, four said they planned on being married by Christmas.
