Environmental Artist Gwyn Michael Seeks to Change the Landscape with Her New Project: Journey to Confluence
Online, April 20, 2011 (Newswire.com) - With her innovative new project Gwyn will travel in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark more than 200 years ago while documenting the modern landscape and exploring the power of art to create change through artist and architect Maya Lin's work on "The Confluence Project" along the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington.
"Through art and place, the Confluence Project strives to increase awareness of how we treat each other and the Earth, with a strong, positive emphasis on envisioning the future-for the next seven generations and beyond. We draw on the emotional power of art as a catalyst to inspire the future preservation of our cultural and natural resources." ~Maya Lin
It was reading this quote that inspired Gwyn's passion for this project realizing that she was no longer satisfied with creating art just for the sake of art. Since art is what she knows she is intent on learning how to use it as a vehicle for change. Gwyn intends to explore Confluence Project in depth while meeting with project leaders and artists involved, as well as those involved in environmental restoration around the project. Through photography, digital art, video, and journaling Gwyn will record her findings to be compiled into a multimedia presentation and teaching model upon her return. It is her plan to educate people about environmental concerns and the power of art in many forms to inspire change and hope for the future, while discovering new ways to use art for this purpose.
Gwyn's current work in digital collage creates hauntingly beautiful images of the local landscape both bucolic and tragic. Her work portrays a bittersweet vision of the natural world and our relationship with it. She has been successfully showing and selling this work online since 2009. Journey to Confluence is being funded through Kickstarter.com an online fundraising platform for creative projects.
