Mr. Windle and Mr. McQuiggan broke down the terrifying risks associated with the infiltration of an ERP system with ransomware, stating, "Ransomware attacks can be detrimental to ERP systems because the malicious code restricts data access, rendering the system useless." Mr. McQuiggan warned, "Although many businesses have cybersecurity measures in place, human error can often put the integrity of the system at risk and leave data vulnerable to cyberattacks, whether through evil intent or a lack of education." In the end, Mr. Windle applied universal advice to the topic: "Detailed planning and preparation help reduce the odds that an employee will be scammed and increase the possibility of recovery once an attack has occurred." Cybersecurity risks are more prevalent than ever, making preparation key to the future safety of your organization.

"When it comes to ERP implementation, out-of-the-box functionality is often what the industry considers to be 'best practices'," clarified Mr. Windle, referencing the high demand for ERP best practices. Mr. Windle went on to say, "Sometimes customization is a necessary addition to your ERP system, but leaders must have reasoning for the enhancement and verify with experts because customization is expensive and can derail an implementation if done improperly." Mr. Windle warned of the most important risk: "Customization removes your product from its upgrade path. The long-term impacts of that are that the system will no longer receive essential patches, security fixes, and corrections to bugs discovered in the system. This can be detrimental to the viability of the ERP." The key continues to be the significance of careful planning, which can mean the difference between an obsolete product and one with the greatest functionality for a business.
