NEW BRAUNFELS, TX (June 10, 2010) - Over 147 used hearing aids were collected by the staff of Estes Audiology and by the members of the Sertoma Clubs of Georgetown and Windcrest (San Antonio) during the inaugural Hearing Aid Roundup held in Georgetown at Legacy Hills by Estes Audiology on Saturday, May 15, 2010 and in New Braunfels at Estes Audiology on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Estes Audiology and the Sertoma Clubs organized these drives to bring awareness to hearing healthcare and to celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month, which is celebrated each year in May. These collected hearing aids will be donated to the UT-Austin Speech and Hearing Clinic where they will then be refurbished and given to those who would otherwise be unable to afford them.
"The Hearing Aid Roundup was a huge success, thanks to the citizens of Georgetown, Sun City, and New Braunfels who took the time out of their day to bring us hearing aids that they no longer used," said Soriya Estes, AuD, owner and founder of Estes Audiology and Legacy Hills Hearing Center by Estes Audiology. "Not only did we collect 147 hearing aids, we had fun and good food doing it. A special thanks to the Sertoma Club for the wonderful help that they did. It was a pleasure to work with them on this beneficial project."
"We were surprised by the response of the community. It was through their generous donations that allowed us to help those in need. A tremendous thanks goes out to all of them who made these drives a success," says Jim Wilson, Speech & Hearing Director of the Georgetown Sertoma Club.
"On behalf of the Windcrest Sertoma Club, it was a pleasure to participate with Estes Audiology. We look forward to making this annual event even more successful next year," added Bob Patton, President of the Windcrest Sertoma Club.
The Sertoma Club is a national organization that focuses on assisting people with hearing health issues and on educating communities on hearing health. In addition, Sertoma clubs throughout North America sponsor the Sertoma Hearing Aid Recycling Program also known as S.H.A.R.P. - a program that collects used hearing aids so that they can be refurbished and given to those economically challenged.
Each year, hearing loss affects millions of Americans. It is estimated that more than 34 million Americans suffer from hearing loss, including children. Through advanced technology now found in advanced hearing devices and aids, most of these sufferers can now hear.
