The event was the public service project component of the ABA Young Lawyers Division Fall Meeting held in Charleston, SC in October of 2012. The purpose of the event was to stress the importance of the right to vote to local high school students through education and being active.
The event was held in the auditorium of West Ashley High and was filled with students from different classes and grade levels. The program started with an introduction from the Chair of the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association, Christopher A. Rogers of Dallas, Texas. Rogers explained the program to students and kept things entertaining. The next portion of the program was a video made by a Texas Bar Association detailing the history of voting rights for different groups of Americans and that the right to vote was not always available to all Americans, and how important it is to exercise those rights.
The video lasted about forty five minutes in duration and examined the legal and constitutional components of voting in an entertaining way. The next speaker was Lacy Durham, the Public Service Director of the ABA Young Lawyers Division. Durham got the students involved with answering questions from the video and other speakers and handed out prizes to students that had the right answers. Attorney Evan Guthrie attended the service project as an attendee of the ABA Young Lawyers Division Fall Meeting and helped with the event by handing out information to students and asking questions. Mr. Guthrie and several local attorneys from the Charleston,
SC area visited West Ashley High School a couple of weeks prior to the roll out event to sign up students from the school that would be age eighteen at the time of the November election. Attorney Guthrie was happy to return to the school to participate in the actual roll out of the program and see it implemented. Mr. Guthrie was happy to make a difference and educate area students on a subject that is of vital importance to everyone and allows students to make a difference on a local, state, and national level. Evan Guthrie looks forward to being a part of future service projects for the American Bar Association and upcoming American voter projects in schools in the Charleston, SC area.
