Excessive Sitting Results In Larger Posteriors, Researchers Find

According to a new study, the human body's cells will turn into fat cells more rapidly when prolonged pressure is applied to body tissues that are weight-bearing due to resting in one position for too long.

According to a recent study conducted at Tel Aviv University, sitting too much will actually make your posterior larger. The researchers, who published their findings in Cell Physiology, found an increase of up to 50% more fat in parts of the body subject to regular pressure from either sitting or lying down. According to the study, the human body's cells will turn into fat cells more rapidly when prolonged pressure is applied to body tissues that are weight-bearing due to resting in one position for too long.

"Our bodies were efficiently designed for regular movement and not just sitting around for long periods," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

"Inactivity, and sitting for long periods of time in particular, are independent health risk factors," adds Tom. "Never sit for more than one hour at a time. Always get up and move regularly during your day. If you have a desk job, be sure you are getting up often and moving around. Stand up while talking on the phone and try some simple exercises. Be sure to do some kind of activity during your breaks and lunch hour. These simple changes will help you to look and feel better, and your body will thank you for it."
