Spring time has arrived and many are already blazing a trail at the local park or neighborhood. With that in mind, pet safety is a must. Read below for a few suggestions:
Online, April 22, 2011 (Newswire.com) - 1. Proper equipment
--With the leash you want to make sure that you are allowing the pet to be able to run at a comfortable pace which means allowing the dog to run but not pull the owner, or have the owner pulling back on the dog.
--Look at a 6 or 10 foot lead that will allow enough space but also the ability to recall the dog if you are coming up to children or traffic. Some pet owners will use retractable leashes when running with their pets and while this works you will want to make sure you have control over the dog at all times.
--Some retractable leashes extend up to 26 feet and it is very hard to recall a dog that has that much space. Also remember to be considerate of other walkers or runners when using longer leashes as you can get tangled up very easily.
--Harnesses are another option. Make sure it fits your dog properly and isn't too tight. You should be able to slip a finger under the straps.
2. Staying hydrated: Dogs need water too!
--You will also want to make sure that you have a water bottle or container to carry if you are going for longer periods.
--Don't let your dog drink from public water fountains made for humans or puddles or drain water which would make them ill.
3. Be safe
--If you are running at dusk or dawn, consider reflective wear for the dog.
--You can get reflective collars or lightweight jackets or vest for the dog to wear that allow visibility without being constricting or causing the dog to overheat.
--A simple blinking light on the dogs collar can be very effective.
4. Respect other people and pets
--And always remember to bring along waste cleanup bags to be kind to every pet owner that takes their pets out for walks.
Be sure to follow these tips and you and your pets will surely be to enjoy your daily trips outdoors.
