Explaining Different Rhinoplasty Procedures
Online, November 26, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Nose jobs are one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. New techniques in the medical field mean that more complex operations and better nose reshapings can be done on a daily basis.
There are two main types of rhinoplasties: open and closed.
An open rhinoplasy requires that a surgeon actually make small incisions at the base of the nose (septum) and where the nose meets the cheek. From there, the skin can be separated from the rest of the face, giving the plastic surgeon a good range for adjusting the nose underneath.
For less complicated procedures, however, having a closed rhinoplasty is a great option.
A closed rhinoplasty just means that the surgeon will make an incision in the septum inside of the nose, rather than on the outside. Although this is considered a less invasive medical procedure, it limits the surgeon's ability to make adjustments because the visibility is greatly reduced.
Closed rhinoplasties are great for small fixes, like bumps or nostril width. Minimal adjustments can be made by only using one incision and working from there. However, for those who wish to completely change the structure of their nose, doing an open rhinoplasty is the only option.
If a patient is having trouble breathing, for example, the plastic surgeon can use a closed rhinoplasty to insert a splint in the nose to help open airways for better breathing.
Both methods of rhinoplasty require being sewn up, as well as lots of rehab and recovery time. Ensuring that each patient knows instructions for care is a huge part of being a good plastic surgeon.
