ExpressionEngine CMS is Now Open Source

EllisLab announces today that their flagship content management system is re-licensed as free and open-source software (FOSS).

Today, EllisLab Inc. announces that their flagship content management system ExpressionEngine is being re-licensed as free and open-source software (FOSS). Under continuous development for the past 15 years, ExpressionEngine is one of the most trusted, mature and feature-rich content management systems on the market today. Previously licensed as a commercial product, ExpressionEngine now uses the widely accepted, permissive Apache 2.0 license, used by all Apache Foundation projects and popular programming languages like Swift.

Some of the most notable websites in the world run on ExpressionEngine, from large organizations like Toyota, Starbucks and BMI, to educational institutions like the University of Chicago, UC Berkley and Dartmouth, to non-profits such as the United Way, as well as government websites including the states of Alaska and Tennessee, and thousands of small companies around the globe. Notably, the last two presidents of the United States — Barack Obama and Donald Trump — have run their websites on ExpressionEngine.

Although we've achieved significant market share in the commercial space and built a very loyal user base, the open-source market today is simply too big to ignore. We are extremely excited at the potential of open source to drive significant growth for EllisLab and its partners, open doors to global markets previously unavailable to us and serve as a platform to deliver cutting-edge technology.

Rick Ellis, Founder & Chief Strategist

Rick Ellis, founder of EllisLab, explains this move:

"Although we've achieved significant market share in the commercial space and built a very loyal user base, the open-source market today is simply too big to ignore. We are extremely excited at the potential of open source to drive significant growth for EllisLab and its partners, open doors to global markets previously unavailable to us and serve as a platform to deliver cutting-edge technology."

EllisLab will now offer a range of services targeted to web agencies in order to help them be more successful. It will also go after key market opportunities and partner with agencies that are part of the ExpressionEngine ecosystem.
