Faculty Of 1000 Launch Ophthalmology Faculty
Faculty of 1000 (F1000), the award-winning medicine and biology literature evaluation service, has launched the much anticipated Ophthalmology Faculty.
Online, April 13, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Leading researchers and clinicians specializing in the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye will select and evaluate key articles and scientific posters in this field for inclusion in the F1000 service. Dr Andrew Lee and Dr Dimitri Azar head up the new Faculty of ten sections; each led by top scientists in the field.
About the Heads of Faculty
Andrew Lee is Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Dr Lee is a recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Honor Award, the AAO Secretariat Award, and the AAO Senior Achievement Award. Dr Lee specializes in optic nerve disease including papilledema, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, optic nerve tumors, and optic neuritis.
Dimitri Azar is the B.A. Field Endowed Chair of Ophthalmologic Research, Professor and Department Head at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago and interim Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A leader in basic science and clinically related vision research, Dr Azar has made significant contributions to the treatment of corneal diseases and to advances in refractive surgery through sophisticated analysis and application of advanced optics. He holds numerous committee positions with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a member of the prestigious American Ophthalmological Association.
As highly respected leaders in their field, Dr Lee and Dr Azar have helped to recruit experts as Section Heads and Faculty Members in the following sections: Anterior Uveitis & Posterior Uveitis; Corneal & External Disorders; Glaucoma; Lens Disorders; Low Vision; Oculoplastic & Orbital Disorders; Ophthalmic Oncology; Refractive Errors & Refractive Surgery; Retinal, Vitreous & Macular Disorders; and Strabismus & Pediatric Ophthalmology.
Commenting on the F1000 service, Dr Lee said: "The internet has opened up a vast treasure trove of information to clinicians. Unfortunately the information is overwhelming and not vetted for quality or content. Faculty of 1000 allows clinicians the opportunity to receive clinically relevant information that is vetted by peers and contained in a single trusted resource."
With the addition of Ophthalmology, F1000 now comprises 32 Faculties, and provides a rapidly expanding consensus map of the most important research trends across the whole of medicine.
Jane Hunter, Managing Director at F1000, said: "We are delighted to announce the launch of the Ophthalmology Faculty and welcome Dr Lee and Dr Azar, and the global team of faculty members they have invited to join them, to F1000. We look forward to seeing our newest medical Faculty grow and develop in the coming months and years."
