FASTPORT Selected by Administration to Team With Industry and Labor Leaders to Help Solve Supply Chain Issues
President Joe Biden and the Cabinet convened industry and labor leaders together last week for a progress report on alleviating supply chain issues that have caused shortages of consumer goods and raised prices and the inflation rate for all Americans.
WASHINGTON, January 6, 2022 (Newswire.com) - FASTPORT Executive Director Dave Harrison; Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx; Darren Hawkins, CEO of Yellow Corp; Christopher Connor, CEO of the American Association of Port Authorities; and Sonia Syngal, CEO of GAP participated in the meeting.
"We recognize that many factors contribute to the current situation," said Dave Harrison. "All of these companies, FedEx, UPS, Yellow, the US Postal Service and the Port Authorities are doing great work right now to help improve the current bottleneck in the supply chain. However, the underlying cause continues to be the lack of professional truck drivers and skilled workers. That's why we were asked to be a part of this Task Force," he added.
FASTPORT, a Department of Labor national apprenticeship intermediary partner with a focus on the transportation sector, is committing to work with trucking employers, unions, and industry associations to establish Registered Apprenticeship programs for their organizations in as little as 48 hours.
"Both sides of the aisle recognize that the driver shortage is an issue that affects everyone in this Country. They also understand that Registered Apprenticeships are a proven way to develop a highly skilled workforce," said Harrison. To solve this problem, we need to bring more people into the transportation and logistics industry. Registered Apprenticeships give employers a valuable tool to help do that," he added.
"If you are in the transportation, logistics and distribution sector, you are facing serious workforce pressure right now. The Administration recognizes the value of Registered Apprenticeships because they are employer-driven programs that combine on-the-job learning with job-related instruction to build worker skills and establish pathways to higher levels of employment and wages," said Brad Bentley, FASTPORT President.
FASTPORT was selected by the Biden-Harris Administration because of its success in the transportation sector and work with transitioning military veterans.
