Fewer Cylinders, More Power In New BMW Models

Online, August 23, 2012 (Newswire.com) - With gasoline prices still high, and with stricter fuel economy regulations coming, BMW has decided to downsize some of their engines, in favor of better fuel economy. One of the models that BMW has already changed is the 2012 BMW 528i. The engine is a 2-liter with only 4 cylinders. The EPA-estimated ratings come in at 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. This is a significant improvement from the previous 528i, which had a 3-liter 6-cylinder engine and was listed as 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Another change is adding more gears to the transmission. The 2012 BMW 528i has an 8-speed automatic versus the 6-speed automatic from the previous generation. Adding more gears allows the engine to maintain lower rpm levels at highway speeds, which gives the engine better fuel economy. To compensate for the lower levels of reserve power in a low-revving engine, BMW is adding turbocharging, which captures energy from the engine's exhaust to pump extra air into the cylinders.

Despite having a smaller engine, fewer cylinders, and more gears, the 2012 BMW 528i delivers better performance than the 6-cylinder versions. The 0-60 speed is half a second faster. The horsepower remains the same, 240, but the 2012 528i has better torque with 260 ft-lbs. Look for other models, like the 2012 BMW 328i and future releases, to have smaller engines and fewer cylinders, but more power.
