Financial Education Benefits Center Stresses Importance of Breaks for Physical and Mental Health

Breaks are an important part of any day, whether that day is spent at work or at home. At work, employees often skip breaks because they feel guilty or stressed. But taking breaks can boost productivity, problem-solving and more. Financial Education Benefits Center, a membership benefits company focused on financial and lifestyle wellness, encourages everyone to take regular breaks and will soon offer a counseling benefit to supplement breaks in case of extreme stress.

Taking breaks is good for mind and body. Activities that keep your body in one position, especially sitting, for prolonged periods of time can stress the body and lead to serious conditions. That is true for both work and play activities. Hobbies like sewing or painting can result in hunched backs if attention goes to the craft rather than posture. But taking a break can rejuvenate the body while also boosting creativity.

It can be easy to skip a break when you get on a roll with whatever you're doing.

Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC

“It can be easy to skip a break when you get on a roll with whatever you’re doing,” said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. “I know I’m guilty of that. But I make sure to always take a break when I’m feeling overwhelmed, stressed or stuck.”

There are many mental benefits of taking breaks, including increased productivity, creativity, problem-solving, information retention, focus and motivation. In a work setting, breaks allow employees to take a step back from a problem or stressor and think about other things. Even daydreaming allows the brain to process things in a way it can’t do normally.

Breaks can include mild activity, like taking a short walk or simply standing up and stretching. When stress is involved, that stretch break can also be a time to re-evaluate the issue or mentally organize the workload. When stress becomes too overwhelming, or if other factors prevent breaks from being as effective as they can be, FEBC members will soon be able to talk to mental health professionals online to help alleviate the stress. Members at the highest-plan level will also have access to counselors by phone any time of the day.

“Breaks are a great tool to get through any activity, whether for fun or work,” said Martinez. “FEBC’s new benefits that allow members to talk to mental health professionals are great supplements to breaks when it comes to dealing with difficult situations. We hope these new benefits will help our members be the best version of themselves.”
