Financial Education Benefits Center Warns of Oncoming Allergy Season

Sniffles. Red eyes. Sneezes. Those symptoms are what some people think about when the topic of allergies comes up. For others, the symptoms are enough for a heavy sense of dread to creep into their lives as months start rolling toward allergy season. Yes, Spring is on its way and that means allergy season is approaching. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC) supports its clients who suffer from allergies and offers a benefit that provides discounts for allergy and sinus relief products.

“Allergies can be really frustrating when you're ready to enjoy the warmer weather with friends and family," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. “It’s tempting to go outside and take advantage of the new sunshine, but allergies might convince many people to stay indoors and miss out on that valuable Vitamin D.”

Hay fever, the type of allergy associated with pollen, affects about 20 million Americans and has no cure. However, there are several options for managing symptoms, including simply avoiding the pollen. Keeping windows and doors closed and wearing layers to cover the mouth, nose, and eyes can help keep exposure to a minimum. Another possible precaution is to rinse off in the shower after spending time outside.

However, those who use medication to manage hay fever symptoms are advised to start early. It is easier to prevent symptoms than react to them. There are a variety of over-the-counter medications that are effective for managing hay fever symptoms. FEBC members have access to a benefit that provides discounts for a variety of health and wellness items, including over-the-counter allergy medications.

If over-the-counter meds are not entirely effective, doctors may prescribe stronger medication. FEBC members also have access to a benefit that gets them in touch with doctors who can answer questions about hay fever and possible courses of action.

“Spring can be really beautiful as all the flowers start blooming and the hillsides turn green,” said Martinez. “No one should have to suffer through that or miss out because of allergies. We hope that our benefits can make it easier for FEBC members to stay healthy through this difficult season and enjoy the warmer weather.”
