First Line Responder Pediatrician Dr. Annie Sparrow's Update on the Growing Impact of Polio on the Children of Syria

A first line medical responder to the crisis in Syria, Pediatric Critical Care Physician Dr. Annie Sparrow has returned repeatedly to the Syrian border to assist with hands-on training of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine to the eroding framework of clinicians available to care for the children and families of the war ravaged region.

Faculty in Global Health at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Annie Sparrow is Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health and Deputy Director of the Human Rights Program.

If I were asked to select three words to describe Dr. Annie Sparrow, they would be selfless, intelligent, and compassionate. Dr. Sparrow's life's work has served as a catalyst in nation's providing protection for; and easing the suffering of the most vulnerable children in our world.

A Pediatrician specializing in Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Sparrow held the appointment of the Director of UNICEF’s malaria program in Somalia for the Global Fund against Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, prior to joining the faculty at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

With a Masters in Public Health from Harvard (2004) Dr. Sparrow has completed field work in Haiti; health education and training of community leaders in northern Afghanistan; clinical work in Darfur; and surveillance in infectious disease for the American Red Cross following Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Sparrow’s August publication Syria: The Other Threat, in the New York Times Review of Books presents a first responder’s view of the critical threat of the epidemic spread of disease from Syria into neighboring countries.

Dr. Sparrow is globally recognized for her work with the children who survived and witnessed the Genocide in Darfur.  The pivotal documentary, Smallest Witnesses: The Crisis in Darfur Through Children's Eyes, features the work and research of Pediatrician Dr. Annie Sparrow and Olivier Bercault, a groundbreaking documentary focused upon the impact the crisis in Darfur had on the children who witnesses and survived the Genocide in Darfur region.
