First-Time Filmmakers to Premiere Short Film at Phenom Film Fest

First-time filmmakers J. Allen, Sonya M. Shannon, and Arlo Ihrig, will be premiering their short film 'Family Business' as an official selection at the first annual Phenom Film Fest in Shreveport, LA.

First-time filmmakers J. Allen, Sonya M. Shannon, and Arlo Ihrig, will be premiering their short film 'Family Business' as an official selection at the first annual Phenom Film Fest in Shreveport, LA.

'Family Business' is about boy who discovers there is more to life and his grandfather than he thought, and that real magic does indeed exist.

After previously working with executive producer and editor, Arlo Ihrig on some experimental projects and local video work, director J. Allen teamed up with his wife and published writer, Sonya M. Shannon to create the screenplay for 'Family Business'.

Always striving to create something new and unique in his work, Allen wanted to bring a short story to the silver screen that would explore the fantasy genre in a down-to-earth telling of a boy who learns about his grandfather's family business and its magical secrets.

When asked why he wanted to tell this short story, Allen replied, "It gave me the opportunity to tell a story about magic, and I always want to have a magical element in my stories."

'Family Business' had a crew of about 20 talented aspiring and industry professionals, making it possible to create a quality short film on a budget and worthy of being an official selection of the Phenom Film Fest.

'Family Business' was recently screened for a private event at the unique and charming non-profit Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs, OH Ihrig's home town, where he once showed movies to the locals as a second generation projectionist. Jenny Cowperthwaite, executive director of the Little Art, commented that, "It's wonderful to see new filmmakers embrace digital methods of story-telling for the big screen, and Family Business is great example of this. It's a fun and magical film." Ihrig added that, "It is more important than ever to support local cinema with your patronage to successfully make the transition from 35mm film to digital."

'Family Business' stars Logan Macaulay, Colin Beaton, E. Lee Smith, Joseph Blackstone (a Shreveport, LA resident) and Stacey Turis, and will be showing at the East Bank Theatre in Bossier City, LA on Saturday September 8th at 11:00 AM along with other sci-fi and fantasy genre short films.
