Five Sparrows Highlights "Girls Who Code" Initiative

Michigan online marketing firm Five Sparrows, LLC, today released its new "Girls Who Code" web page, marking its support of the "Girls Who Code" and STEM awareness movements.

Michigan online marketing firm Five Sparrows, LLC, today released its new “Girls Who Code” web page, marking its support of the “Girls Who Code” and STEM awareness movements. These initiatives are not only supported by web giants like Google and educational heavy-hitters like Harvard, last week President Obama announced a new initiative called CS for All (CS stands for Computer Science), designed to provide every student “hands-on CS and math classes to make them job-ready on day one.”

“It’s such an important topic today – promoting the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for girls and young women as a career path,” said Lauren Hobson, President of Five Sparrows. “I started seeing ‘Code Like a Girl’ and ‘Do Math Like a Girl’ topics popping up online, then I came across an article from the Harvard Gazette that was ultimately the motivation for our Girls Who Code page,” said Hobson.

According to the website GirlsWhoCode.com, 74% of girls express interest in STEM topics when they are in middle school, but just 0.4% of girls chose computer science as their major in college. And by graduation time, only 12% of all computer science degrees are awarded to women.

“Google has a wonderful resource called ‘Made With Code’, where girls can find interesting coding activities and projects that involve things like animation, fashion, movies, and even coding parties that appeal to girls who are not necessarily drawn to robots and rockets,” said Hobson. “So as we were developing the new Five Sparrows website, we thought it was important to include a page to support this initiative, and to show that, like most businesses today, we have women behind the scenes who are coding ‘like a girl’ everyday!”

Five Sparrows plans to add new resources, links, and information to the page as they are discovered, and hopes to eventually add an interactive platform for girls and women to engage directly as we raise awareness and share resources about this important topic.

Engineers help people and solve problems for society.  Working with technology requires collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, which are skills that apply to both boys AND girls.

“So girls, don’t be turned off by ‘geeky’ subjects like math and science because they may involve boring textbooks, clunky robots, or flying rockets,” said Hobson. “Go engineer something amazing – and do it like a girl!”
