Flame Run Presents Recycled Objects Glass Artist, Sungsoo Kim
Flame Run showcases a glass artist who finds inspiration in recycled products
Online, January 5, 2011 (Newswire.com) - LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery will feature a solo exhibit of the work of Sungsoo Kim from Feb. 4 through March 25. An opening night reception begins at 5 p.m. on Gallery Hop night with a demonstration at 7 p.m.
The show will include work from Rediscovery, Kim's series of vividly colored kiln-cast glass sculptures. To make his molds, he uses discarded styrofoam packaging and other recycled consumer and industrial products. The Rediscovery series was inspired by packaging from a computer purchase.
"Finding new uses for discarded objects is one way to breathe life back into objects around us," Kim said. "To see art where others see trash is one thing, but to lead others to see that art for themselves is what artists have been engaged in since the turn of the century."
Kim, who lives in Cleveland, is a graduate of the glass art program at Kookmin University in Seoul, Korea. He came to the U.S. in 2006 to study at Pilchuck Glass School and earned his MFA at Kent State University in 2008. He's currently an adjunct faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Kent State University. His awards include Best of Show at the 2009 BIGG: Breakthrough Ideas in Global Glass in Columbus, Ohio.
