FORE's Present Domain Leaders Delivered Lessons To The Future Of Management

For a management student nothing is greater motivation than seeing one of his own alumni, who has arrived in the corporate world.

For a management student nothing is greater motivation than seeing one of his own alumni, who has arrived in the corporate world. Learning the tricks of the trade from a group of celebrated alumni can be extremely dynamic, cerebral, and an amazingly honest experience. While FORE School of Management taps into its diaspora of alumni right through the year, the most awaited interaction is very easily the MARK-FIN/ OP-HR Conclave which was scheduled on 13th March, 2013. Organised by FORE Alumni Network, this conclave brings four of the brightest FORE'ians from the four major fields of management, to talk about the current trends and future of their field. The chosen four, called upon to mentor the current batches of FORE School of Management this year, were Ms. Haneet Vohra (Director-Marketing, KSB Designs) for Marketing, Ms. Deeksha Gupta (Manager/ BU Head at Risk Management Solutions, India) for Finance Ms. Jaya Singh (Associate Director at LEAD Search) for HR, and Mr. Anirvan Roy (Head of Operations, Translational India) for Operations.

"Some people like dreaming; some like to live in reality. But the people who really matter are the few who like to convert their dreams into reality".

As the first speaker for the MARK-FIN/ OP-HR Conclave, Ms. Haneet Vohra chose these beautiful lines to set the right tone. An alumnus of the batch of 1993-95, Haneet was awarded the 'Best all round student' of her batch by the then Finance Minister, Mr. Manmohan Singh. Also awarded the 'Best graduate of batch 1993-95', Haneet was placed with Shaw Wallace, on campus. A Finance graduate from FORE School of Management, Haneet has had a long innings with DCM Remy - the makers of the famous cognac Remy Martin- and was part of the team that launched Highland Distilleries (Makers of Famous Grouse) in India. Haneet shared her valuable insights, and also outlined the entire spectrum of careers that present themselves to a management graduate today.

"Before zeroing on an industry, decide the function that you are built for. If you are good at number crunching, you are made for Finance. Those of you who have an inclination towards machines, planning and strategy, and believe in zero error; you are cut out for Operations. If you can manage others, have good communications skills, and can soak yourselves in an organization's psyche, you are built for an HR role. Finally, if you like to be driven towards goals and targets, chances are that you will be a success in Marketing." Jaya Singh chalked out the diverse path that took her from sales and marketing at Pepsi, to direct marketing at Avon, and even strategy and consumer insights at Hindustan Times. An alumnus from the 1993-1995 batch, Jaya shared indicators and trends based on her profile as headhunting consultant hiring talent for premier organisations PAN India.

In her turn, Ms. Deeksha Gupta underscored to the students, the importance of taking informed decisions about their career.

"My experience as a Predictive Analyst makes me even more aware of how unpredictable the future is increasingly getting. As new industries, fields and nature of jobs emerge, you as future managers will have to be far more flexible and adaptive to be able to face unknown challenges in your career."

Call it good old chivalry or just plain coincidence, in this women dominated forum Anirvan Roy, Head of Operations at Translational (I) spoke last. Anirvan, who passed out of FORE School of Management in 1994, pulled out numerous cases from his experience with Thomas Cook, Edutech (Middle East), Sify, Xerox and DHL

"In these uncertain times, there is a much better chance at happiness for you. Changing trends, and increased customer knowledge.... All indicate that if you go after a job that gives you satisfaction - rather than just aiming for a big salary - you will end up better off on all counts."

With B-schools looking at professional mentoring in a big way, top notch B-schools like FORE School of Management have the advantage of a train of celebrated alumni in the corporate world. Platforms like the MARK-FIN/ OP-HR Conclave act as a platform for the ultimate objective of one-on-one student-alumni mentoring.
