The Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2011, is an update of rates for new cases, deaths and trends for the most common cancers in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This report, published by experts from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), the ACS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the NCI, found trends in the trends among common cancer in the U.S.

Among these trends included: the incidence rate of thyroid cancer is increasing among both men and women, as well as the mortality rate for liver cancer, and the incidence rate of oral/oropharyngeal cancers is increasing among white men despite a decline in oral cancers that are more closely associated with tobacco use.

Many cases of cancer could be prevented with more systematic efforts to reduce tobacco use, improve diet and physical activity, and expand the use of established screening tests, according to the ACS.
