Foundation for a Drug-Free South Halting Rampant Drug Abuse

Online, July 24, 2012 (Newswire.com) - According to this year's United Nations World Drug Report, drug-abuse kills some 200,000 each year and creates a "heavy financial burden" internationally. In a concerted effort to counter this epidemic, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World organized, sponsored and contributed to drug awareness activities to prevent drug abuse before it begins during the weeks leading up to and during International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was created by the UN General Assembly in December 1987 to encourage all sectors of society to work together to tackle drug abuse and addiction. At a conference in Tennessee, the Foundation made drug education materials available to judges, court administrators, law enforcement officers, social workers, and treatment providers who deal with the backwash of drug abuse in state adult felony drug courts, DUI courts and juvenile drug courts. Brian Fesler who coordinates the Tennessee chapter of the Foundation said, "We are committed to bringing the truth about drugs to light so we can end degradation in society."

Since last year's UN Day against Drugs and Illicit Trafficking, the Foundation has distributed some 3.4 million copies of drug education booklets and organized, sponsored and participated in more than 3,000 drug prevention activities in their communities.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.

Through a worldwide network of volunteers, 56 million educational handouts have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 120 countries and Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been aired on 275 television stations. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and thereby make the decision for themselves to not use them.
