Frankenhuffer Productions Launches An Unusual Kickstarter Campaign For Their New Project, "Worst Night to Grow a Pair"
Online, March 16, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Based in Seattle, Washington, Frankenhuffer Productions has won awards from Seattle's True Independent Film Festival, Indie Gathering and, most recently, the 2011 Seattle Times / Seattle International Film Festival 3 Minute Masterpiece contest for "Ego Boost". After collaborating on over a dozen low to no-budget features and shorts, director, Ty Huffer, and producer, Matthew Burtner, are taking their filmmaking to the next level; the level with a significant budget. With this in mind, the pair co-wrote the screenplay for the dark comedy, "Worst Night to Grow a Pair", an epic short. Set almost entirely in one bar, "Worst Night to Grow a Pair" tells the story of Rex, a man that lost claim to his favorite dive, "The Jungle Room", after a messy breakup. The story takes place on the night he decides to take his bar back. Unbeknownst to him, it's his ex-girlfriend's bachelorette party as well as the night a banned comedian decides to take the bar hostage and unveil his new act. Guilty laughs and blood ensue.
Knowing they would need some help in getting a project this big off the ground, Ty and Matt brought Will Chase aboard as a consulting producer. Will brings his experience working with larger budgets and connections from years of producing and production managing in Seattle. Together, they have assembled a fantastic cast, filled with some of Seattle's best and brightest actors. "Many great directors believe that casting is 90% of directing," said Will. "If that is in fact true, we have done 90% of the work making this film."
The next step was funding and for that, Kickstarter was the best option. Kickstarter is a crowd-funding website that allows artists and creative types to raise money for projects they want to produce and fans to directly support the creation of things they want to see. Project creators are also able to set rewards for different donation amounts. Everything from a copy of the finished product, to T-shirts, to a taco party are available as rewards but the Frankenhuffer team wanted to have a little more fun.
"We're asking for a lot of money and since we have a hostage situation in our script, I guess the ransom idea was kind of inevitable." said co-writer and producer, Matthew Burtner. "We wanted to be able to give a taste of the tone we want for 'Worst Night to Grow a Pair' and found that we were also able to address the different filmmaking obstacles that are best overcome with money. Things like poorly constructed sets and cheap special effects. I'm also glad that we got Gevin Booth to be a part of this since he's in both "Worst Night" and "Ego Boost" but doesn't have lines in either."
In the videos, Gevin Booth plays an actor that is unhappy with the Kickstarter plan and decides to take the producers hostage, using them to raise the "ransom" on Kickstarter. A series of videos were produced to be released, one at a time when certain dollar amounts are reached, that verify the safety of the producers. There's no telling if it was the T-shirts, humor or clever videos that helped but by the end of the first week the Kickstarter was nearly 50% funded. The campaign runs until Sunday, April 8th at 12:52 PM PDT and the filmmakers would be ecstatic to raise more than their goal. Frankenhuffer Productions is looking forward to re-investing in the Seattle economy and supporting the local filmmaking community. With a Seattle-based cast and crew in place, the team is reaching out to that community of businesses, peers and fans to help aid the funding of the project through the use of Kickstarter.
