"We are looking forward to providing students an outstanding and unique education opportunity in a nurturing environment," said Dr. David Thomas, Franklin Academy Charter School Board Chairman. "Our philosophy is to challenge every student with a rigorous curriculum, maintain a climate of high expectations supported by excellent staff and constantly focus on the whole child."
Franklin Academy is a not-for-profit charter school and will be in compliance with the Florida Sunshine State Standards. Unique to Franklin Academy is the emphasis on the "whole" child beyond textbooks. Through a sustained and integrated program of character development, Franklin students will explore a sense of community, integrity and obligations to self and the world. Some of the other unique features of the educational program include an extended school day and single-gender core curriculum classes. Franklin Academy has partnered with Stetson University, whose study of single-gender education is widely respected, to provide teacher professional development and data assessment. Students will attend co-educational social activities and enrichment programs. Enrichment classes for all students include chess taught by a grand master, art, music, physical education and computer technology and research.
The inspiration for Franklin Academy was Ben Franklin himself, a founding father who personified the pursuit of excellence, discovery and creativity. Additionally, he was an innovator, had a strong sense of community and lived by his virtues of character. The school will incorporate many of these virtues into the school day.
