Chandler, AZ -June 22, 2010- ChronicDB, the only software technology that applies live database update version control, announced today that it achieved live migration of 100 database connections with zero downtime to the database application.

Live connection migration is a critical component of eliminating database downtime. When a database must be moved to a different server, the only practical option so far has been to stop the database application, create a copy of the database, and point the application to the new copy. Although the time to copy the database has been reduced significantly with the help of master-slave replication, the database application is still stopped while a slave replica is catching up to the master copy.

With ChronicDB, the replica catches up to the master copy while the application is still running and the live application connections are pointed to the replica without being interrupted at all. This means the application does not suddenly return unavailability errors to the user and does not require corrective steps to be taken by the user.

Experiments performed by ChronicDB have shown that it is possible to relocate a live database while 100 concurrently executing connections are issuing queries at a high transaction rate (200 transactions/second, with 12% of the transactions being writes). A live update of a database containing a table with 10 million rows minimized the perceived pause time that is visible to the database application to under 1 second.

Reducing pause time down to a few seconds is substantial progress compared to completely interrupting the application. For example, 28% of online shoppers will not wait longer than 4 seconds for a web page to load before leaving and a viable database update solution should be capable of meeting such constraints. Organizations deploying ChronicDB gain the ability to define maximum tolerable pause times according to their business goals, and the explicit containment of pause time is positively reflected against their revenue.

Along with being the only software technology that applies live schema changes, ChronicDB offers tiered pricing that makes the technology accessible to both enterprise software companies as well as small businesses. Live update technology is becoming a cost-efficient reality through pricing tiered according to the size of the database. A free community download of the 4GB version and additional versions that combine free technical support help reduce the startup costs of a high availability database solution.
