Fructose Consumption Linked to Cardiovascular and Diabetes Risk in Adolescents
High-fructose diets were correlated with higher blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin resistance and inflammatory factors associated with heart and vascular disease.
Online, April 11, 2012 (Newswire.com) - A recent study at Georgia Health Sciences University found evidence of increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes for adolescents who consume a lot of fructose. High-fructose diets were correlated with higher blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin resistance and inflammatory factors associated with heart and vascular disease. These same adolescents exhibited higher amounts of visceral belly fat, another known disease risk factor.
Fructose is found naturally in fruits and vegetables, and nothing but health benefits have been associated with their consumption. Studies consistently show a positive relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and decreased risk of chronic diseases. However, fructose is much more concentrated in table sugar, corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HFCS is a common ingredient in almost all processed foods and drinks because of its intense sweetness and low cost. Adolescents consume more fructose than any other age group and are therefore at greater risk.
"Proper diet, activity and lifestyle are the ingredients needed for ideal body composition and optimal health," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "We maintain that manmade refined and processed foods, like HCFS, are toxic to our bodies and ongoing research continues to back up this position."
"Companies that produce these products are not concerned about your health or your family's health," adds Dian. "They are interested in maximizing profits. Their lobbies in Washington are very influential, so don't expect our government to safeguard you. Your health is your responsibility-take it seriously."
