Fullerton, CA- HIU Partners with Local Groups for Fullerton Mayor's Prayer Breakfast
Online, October 18, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Hope International University (HIU) helped coordinate the 28th Annual Fullerton Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Fullerton, CA on Wednesday, October 12. This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah, who boasts over 35 years of experience in collegiate coaching, administration, and public speaking.
In addition to partnering with other members of the Fullerton Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Committee, HIU also had a number of administrators and officials present at the event, including President John L. Derry. Dr. Paul Alexander, Hope's Vice President of Academic Affairs, led attendees in prayer for the city and nation, and Dr. Joseph Cho, Chairman of the HIU Music Department, sang a stirring rendition of "You Raise Me Up." He later ended the event by leading everyone in singing "God Bless America." A special thanks was given to Dr. LeRoy Fulton, former President of HIU and Senior Development Officer, for his twelve years of service as the Chairman of the Prayer Breakfast Committee. Due to health issues, Dr. Fulton was unable to attend the event this year.
Mayor F. Richard Jones spoke briefly about the state of the city and nation before introducing Dr. Jeremiah who inspired the audience to strive for their goals. Her address put forward the notion that we are all on an expedition and the best leader for our journey is Christ. She challenged attendees to accept and recognize Christ as the only one who can guide and equip us to conquer the everyday challenges in our life, what she termed "high places."
Dr. Jeremiah is a member of four Halls of Fame, including the Ohio State Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum. She was chosen as Big West Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1991, and has authored two books on coaching. She is also the founder of the organization High Places.
Modeled after the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C., the Fullerton Mayor's Prayer Breakfast is an opportunity for citizens, local business and organizations, and groups to come together to pray for the city, state, and nation. Among the 41 groups present for this year's event were the Fullerton Police Officers Association, Century 21 Discovery, Fullerton Fire Department, Eastside Christian Schools, Fullerton Main Rotary Club, Professional Home Mortgage, Lee & Associates and Farmers & Merchants Bank.
