Fun in the sun: Santee students get energized on STEAM Day

Sullivan Solar Power and Momentum Tutoring demonstrate the power of the sun

Earlier this month Momentum Tutoring, a nonprofit academic mentoring program in Santee, and San Diego-based solar firm, Sullivan Solar Power, partnered to host a fun, educational event for students. The Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics (STEAM) Day celebration was a part of the nonprofit’s Summer Cool Celebration. Students and parents within the tutoring program were invited to participate in a Renewable Energy Challenge, which included baking cookies in a solar oven, racing solar cars, attending educational solar workshops and contributing to a solar panel mural. Students and parents enjoyed a fun solar-filled day showcasing and celebrating students’ innovative renewable designs and knowledge of sustainable solutions.

“While the sun was burning hot, providing extra summer energy, we supported and celebrated our stellar Momentum students working towards a brighter future!” said Theresa Bozhor, Momentum Tutoring’s founder and CEO.

During the event, Momentum Tutoring students were asked to design a creative new form of renewable energy technology and to demonstrate that technology through pictures and diagrams as part of the Renewable Energy Challenge. The students presented their designs to STEAM Day attendees and the most innovative and creative ideas received prizes from Sullivan Solar Power. This project-based learning opportunity exemplifies Momentum Tutoring’s mission to engage students and enhance academic performance. After students participated in the interactive workshop to learn about renewable energy and how solar energy works, they demonstrated what they learned by harnessing the power of the sun to race solar sprint cars donated by Sullivan Solar Power.

This was Sullivan Solar Power’s second annual solar education experience with the Momentum students. Sullivan Solar Power recognizes the importance of education and is not only committed to providing educational opportunities within San Diego for adults and students, but also strives to create solar advocates and future STEAM leaders.

“By introducing the power of solar to students at a young age, their understanding deepens of renewable energy, thus giving a chance for a brighter and cleaner future for this planet,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power, “Our mission is to change the way this world generates electricity and these students will one day be the leaders of this mission.”

Momentum Tutoring and Sullivan Solar Power are proud to support educational growth by sharing the exciting possibilities of renewable energy with the Santee community. If you are interested in learning more about how solar is changing the way San Diegians generate electricity, Sullivan Solar Power will be hosting educational Solar Experience seminars in the East County San Diego area on August 10 and September 7.
