Fututre Scientist Awarded Prestigious Scholarship
Online, April 11, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Granting Access to Math & Science (GRAMS) scholarship announced earlier this month that Shermaine L. Hutchins was recently awarded a $10,000 renewable academic achievement scholarship.
The Granting Access to Math & Science (GRAMS) scholarship is a scholarship program available to SETGO students. It supports unmet financial needs to a maximum of $10,000/annum and transfers with the student at Bowling Green State University in subsequent years.
SETGO, which stands for Science, Engineering & Technology Gateway Ohio, is a collaborative venture in which Bowling Green State University and Owens Community College partner with local community-based organizations to increase the number of students graduating with associates and bachelor's degrees in the STEM fields - Science, technology, engineering and math.
Like many national scholarships, the Granting Access to Math & Science (GRAMS) scholarship is highly selective. Thousands of students nationwide applied for the scholarship. Less than 5 students were awarded the scholarship this year.
Hutchins, a biochemistry/pre-med major with a math minor, is an active volunteer at Promedica St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, OH. For his superior academic achievement, Shermaine L. Hutchins has been recently been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, an international Academic Honor Society. Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest, largest and most prestigious honor society in the world with nearly 2.5 million members and 1280 chapters in nine nations.
By fostering retention and academic success via attention to the whole student - in academic, financial & affective realms - SETGO is a gateway to opportunity. The aim of the GRAMS scholarship and SETGO is to increase access to science-based careers for the large and demographically diverse student populations served.
