Gardening Grows Community And Good Karma

Online, March 14, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Momentum has been building for a movement in the name of localizing diets. Pedal Patch Community (PPC) has developed a means to helping yourself and communities in need evolve toward becoming a flourishing local-vore. Jason Eugene Boarde, PPC's Director, explains the motivation for creating the Garden-Share Program between PPC and the community at large, "We're hoping that people really start taking environmental matters more seriously." With the guidance and support of knowledgeable, energetic professionals, success in this endeavor is a snap.

The impacts of these gardens reach well beyond the plates of community donors. Kristen Hansen, Co-Director of New School West, advocates the importance of connectedness within a community, ""...growing up with a sense of place binds people to their neighborhoods and promotes a sense of stewardship among its inhabitants creating a healthier individual through identification of place."

PPC assists community members to convert their traditional, monotonous lawns into luscious, productive gardens. PPC members and volunteers come by and assist with setting up and maintaining the gardens according to the donor's schedule. The bountiful harvests are collected and a portion of the harvest is donated to local food banks. Some of the food banks supported are the Los Angeles Food bank, Westside Food Bank, Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition and more.

After the initial transformation of their gardens, almost all current participants are so smitten with the experience; they decided to expand their gardens to support their more sustainable lifestyle. After learning about gardening from Boarde, donors revel in a new appreciation for the process of in-home food production.
