Geodatabase Management and Site Mapping in Saudi Arabia

SBL is about to work on a new assignment "Geodatabase management and Site mapping" in Saudi Arabia. The GIS experts from the Geomatics division, Agilesh Kumar and Johnson J will be working on-site for the GIS mapping and daily information entry provided by the surveyors into the Geo-database and produce cartographic maps on ArcGIS. They will be directing the surveyors and collecting data necessary to upload on the Geo-database while the management of the Geo-database will be done by geocrats located in SBL office. The Geo-database will be updated by the end of every week.

The main objective of this project is to remediate a coastal area in the north-east of Saudi Arabia. This are was polluted by the severe oil spills which was the aftermath of the raging Gulf war in 1991. The site under study consists of 4 areas located within the intertidal zone making a total surface of 182 hectares. The activities included in the remediation work are Conducting a topographic survey of the total area, surveying vertical control points of site features and planned works, Constructing tidal channels in the flat mud marsh area (intertidal zone), Excavating areas with asphalt and heavy oil contamination, De-compacting and tilling a number of selected areas, Planting new mangroves and other plantations, Constructing access roads, Contain and manage any visible oil during construction, Developing and maintaining a Geo-database with Access to be used in ArcGIS and provide necessary work support figures on ArcGIS v9.3. The duration of the project is 6 months and there is a possibility for extension of the work for another 6 months.
