With a new year approaching, many independent auto dealerships are taking stock of the past 12 months, reflecting on 2017’s sales trends and preparing for new challenges and opportunities. In a new statement to the press, Get My Auto shares some preliminary data on 2017’s sales numbers and also offers some reflections on the industry as a whole.

“The past few years have set a number of sales records so from the beginning, we knew it would be difficult for 2017’s numbers to surpass them,” Get My Auto notes. “With that said, early reports indicate that 2017’s auto sales, while not quite as robust as last year’s, are still quite healthy. Auto sales remain strong, even if they’re not quite record-breaking.”

This is good news overall and according to Get My Auto, there are a few especially positive findings. “The 2017 data shows that interest in new and used cars remains high, in fact, it’s about on par with last year’s sales numbers,” the company says. “And for light trucks and SUVs, demand is actually increasing. This is the category where dealerships are seeing the most sales growth.”

Another healthy sign for dealerships pertains to employment. “Dealership employment and payroll numbers increased in 2017, which is a strong indicator that the industry as a whole is healthy,” Get My Auto notes. “Of course, this is welcome news for auto dealership employees, in particular.”

Get My Auto finds that the state of the industry is positive, yet there is always room for growth. “For dealerships to sustain these positive trends, robust and intentional marketing efforts will be needed,” the company states. “2018 will offer a lot of opportunities in this regard including local SEO, PPC, highly targeted Facebook Ads, Craigslist posts and more.”

In other words, Get My Auto says, “Dealerships can’t afford to coast on these positive numbers; they need to do the legwork to keep the industry thriving.”
