According to a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, an overwhelming 87 percent of Americans dislike the experience of buying a car from a traditional dealership. Given this staggering rate of discontentment, it comes as no surprise that more and more consumers are leaving the dealerships altogether, choosing instead to purchase their vehicles online. In a new statement to the press, Orange County based automotive blog Get My Auto shares some trends in online vehicle sales, and explains how they are disrupting the traditional dealership model.

“Simply put, spending an afternoon at the dealership can be seen as a hassle, but many online services now make it easy to browse, buy, finance, and have your car delivered directly to your door,” says the Get My Auto statement. “It’s full-service and entirely convenient. Little wonder that so many consumers now prefer this model.”

A couple of services in particular stand out—Beepi and Carvana. The former is a used car seller that essentially functions as an online dealership. Owen Savir, the company’s co-founder, describes it like this: “Beepi is a customer-centric two-sided marketplace, which revolves around the needs of our buyers and sellers. Our goal was to eliminate the need for sketchy Craigslist meet ups, but still retain the financial benefits of buying or selling privately. At Beepi, everything is done online, and you never need to leave the comfort of home.”

Meanwhile, a Carvana spokesperson speaks to the need of empowering consumers and making them less dependent on dealers. “Carvana was created to put consumers back in control of the purchasing process,” the spokesperson states.

The question is, what do these trends mean for dealerships? There’s no easy answer to that question, except to say that the tried-and-true auto sales model clearly isn’t working for consumers any longer. “To survive over the long haul, dealerships will need to change with the times, and borrow a page from the Beepi and Carvana playbook,” says Get My Auto.
