Get My Auto Weighs in on Honda's Ambitious Future

The CEO of Honda has announced a plan to shift attention to hybrid and electric vehicles.

Recently, Takahiro Hachigo, the CEO of Honda, made a surprising announcement: it is his hope to see the majority of Honda’s American auto sales be either hybrid or electric vehicles by the year 2030. If his plan comes to fruition, this could signal a major sea change in auto manufacturing. Get My Auto of Orange County has weighed in with a new statement to the press.

“In light of this surprising revelation from the Honda CEO, it is important to first consider how close to its goal the company actually is,” Get My Auto states. The answer: not very close at all. Currently, Honda does not have a single electric vehicle in production. It does have one hybrid, a number that’s down dramatically following several Honda hybrids being phased out of production.

An article from The Drive offers useful context: “It is worth noting that Honda is one of the few automakers that offers a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. That being the new Clarity, which has a range of 366 miles on a single tank of hydrogen, which is also the longest official range of any zero-emissions vehicle on sale in the United States.” But while that may be true, there are not nearly enough hydrogen fueling stations to make this particularly helpful to Honda on its quest.

“What we have to infer from this is that Honda has a lot more hybrid and electric vehicles up its sleeves—vehicles that it has not yet revealed to the general public,” comments Get My Auto. “In the next few years, we may begin to see more and more of the company’s focus shift toward these more environmentally friendly vehicles. And if that holds true, other major car companies may follow Honda’s lead.” Indeed, some companies, like Toyota, are already well ahead of Honda in terms of electric and hybrid vehicle production.

“This could be a significant new trend in the automotive world,” Get My Auto concludes.
