The Stonewall Citizens' Patrol (SCP) is a volunteer neighborhood watch patrol group operating in the highly diverse Hillcrest, North Park and University Heights areas of San Diego. Over 30 volunteers receive training from the San Diego Police Department and take turns patrolling the streets. Over the last 6 months those volunteer numbers have dropped to a mere 14 people as their funding was drastically been cut. "We have 20 active volunteers covering 24 patrol shifts each month... unfortunately some shift just cannot get covered due to the lack of funds to operate the additional vehicles needed " says Aaron Heier, Acting President of the SCP. The San Diego Police Department considers SCP the most successful example of a community-generated safety initiative in the city's history. "Stonewall Citizens' Patrol is the best example of how people can come together and truly make a positive impact on a community," says Officer David Surwilo of the San Diego Police Department's Western Division. "When I speak at meetings or with individuals, I always refer to Stonewall Citizens' Patrol as the model manager for any kind of volunteer patrol effort. SCP's professionalism, dedication and commitment are what all groups should strive to achieve and it's a sincere pleasure for the SDPD's Western Division to have Stonewall Citizens' Patrol working with us to help improve the safety and overall quality of life for the people and community."
