Gompels HealthCare Limited Achieve ISO 14001 Certification

Award follows in-depth assessment of the company's environmental management system.

Melksham based company Gompels HealthCare has been awarded certification to the prestigious international standard for Environmental Management Systems. This certification by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognizes the company's determination to manage the ecological impact of its business through concrete measures and regular auditing.

The certification was awarded following an in-depth assessment of the company's current environmental management system.

Having achieved certification for the ISO 9001 Quality Standard back in 2002 Gompels started to plan for accreditation to the 14001 environmental standard 12 months ago, forming discussion groups to formulate an environmental policy that could be turned into an action plan to secure achieve best practice in every aspect of the organisation's activity. This plan identified all of Gompels' key environmental issues, including waste management, carbon emissions, energy use and water use, and ensured that processes were in place for effective management, prevention of pollution, environmental improvement and legal compliance.

"It's all about sustainability," said Mhairi Richardson, Operations Director and leader of the initiative. "This effort has required participation from every member of staff, and a tightening of practices to achieve best possible use of the planet's resources."
Since moving to the purpose built site in late 2007, Gompels HealthCare management have adopted measures to improve the energy performance of the building and to reduce the company's environmental impact, while at the same time putting in place programs for raising environmental awareness among employees. The company has also taken into account employee suggestions when adopting a number of projects designed to promote rational use of resources and waste recycling.

"We are proud to have received ISO 14001 certification, which rewards a collective effort by management and employees to embrace a responsible and rational approach to managing our environment. This standard alongside our ISO 9001 certification shows our commitment to continual improvement and sustaining our business and the environment in which we all live" said Managing Director Sam Gompels. "The company continues to go from strength to strength even through these difficult times and this is a credit to both our employees and to our drive to achieve the highest standards possible."
