Google Acquired BumpTop with 3D Desktop Technology

Google aquired BumpTop as well as its 3D desktop technology. What is Google's plan with BumpTop?

Google has acquired Bump Technologies, the Canada maker of a 3D desktop called BumpTop,accouned by Bump on Sunday.

At first, its investor admitted the news, while later, the homepage of BumpTop declares they will suspend the development of the current product, and more important news to announce.

"Today, we have a big announcement to make: we're excited to announce that we've been acquired by Google!," a note posted to the company's Web site said. "This means that BumpTop (for both Windows and Mac) will no longer be available for sale. Additionally, no updates to the products are planned."

Financial details were not disclosed, but the company said it would keep its software available for download for one week. A Google representative confirmed the acquisition but declined to discuss specifics of the deal.

The company was founded by Anand Agarawala, who has been developing the technology to make the desktop more like a real desk by using three dimensions, icon piles, and photo pin-ups. BumpTop has been available for PC since last year and recently launched its Mac version.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, what is Google planning to do with BumpTop? It's tough to say at first glance - Google's really all about the web, not the desktop, which may be why BumpTop itself is shutting down. However, BumpTop's technology could be used in anything from Chrome OS to Android to bolster their interfaces. There's just a lot of talent on the BumpTop team.

Here is an email that BumpTop sent to its users yesterday, announcing that it was shutting down
