Google Teams Up With Magnolia Broadband

Online, July 7, 2012 (Newswire.com) - It has been reported that the web giant Google has penned down a deal with a USA based broadband company, Magnolia Broadband, under which the latter has sold more than 50 beams forming technology patent of Mobile Transmit Diversity (MTD) to Google for an undisclosed amount. The patent includes services like, expanding network coverage, increasing spectrum utilization, enhancing uplink transmission speeds at the cell edge, and boosting the battery life of the device. Osmo Hautanen, the CEO of Magnolia said that in Google's acquisition of the patents, underlies the necessity of such technologies in mobile broadband devices.

The deal states that, since Google has not acquired the software but only the services, hence any software that will be integrated to a mobile broadband device will be the asset of the Magnolia broadband and can be acquired through vendors and companies that deal in chipsets and mobile devices.

Commenting upon the deal, the Chairman of Magnolia Broadband, Yaron Eitan, said that the deal would be another milestone for the company by providing returns to its investors and granting aid to the company for further improvement of the MTD Technology. Yaron also stated that the company is in the process of enhancing the technology with advanced features like: video streaming, peer-to-peer applications and others on mobile devices like Smart Phones, Tablets, etc. so that its users can enjoy the benefits of a speedy performance and a better network coverage at a wider range.

Osmo said that this acquisition by Google will add some extra value to its current patent store, and could go hand in hand with its Motorola Mobility acquisition that took place in the recent past, and is presently fighting a battle over its patent with Apple. However, he thinks that getting hold of such mobile specific patents could keep the cyber criminals away.
