Governor Appoints NWA Oncologist to Breast Cancer Oversight Committee

Dr. J. Thaddeus Beck, of Highlands Oncology Group, Appointed to Ove

Dr. J. Thaddeus Beck, of Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), was appointed, for a second term, to the Oversight Committee on Breast Cancer Research, for the Arkansas Breast Cancer Research Program (ABCRP), by Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson. The appointed term is through December 31, 2019.

In 1997, through Act 434, The Arkansas Breast Cancer Act, the Arkansas General Assembly authorized monies to “support research efforts into the cause, cure, treatment, earlier detection and prevention of breast cancer,” through the creation of the ABCRP, according to the University of Arkansas for Medical Science’s Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute website.

The Oversight Committee on Breast Cancer Research distributes annual funding to the top breast cancer researchers in the state. As a part of the Oversight Committee, Dr. Beck will play a role in administering grants based on research priorities and scientific merit. Mike Beebe, former governor of Arkansas, elected Dr. Beck to the committee for a four-year term in 2012.

Dr. Beck has been, and is continually, involved in research on treatment options for breast cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer and more. Dr. Beck is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology from the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 2002, Dr. Beck was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Research studies that Dr. Beck has been involved in have been presented at numerous conferences including: The American Society of Clinical Oncology Meeting, The Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference, The AACR-NCI-EORTC International Conference on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics, The International Congress of the Society for Melanoma Research in Zurich and more. His research has been widely published in many medical journals and he has a special ongoing interest in breast cancer research.

As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, HOG is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.
